Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, 11 AM – The National Weather Service has extended the Tornado Watch for Galveston County until 2 PM today, and issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 11:45 AM.
Strong thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes are moving into the area and will likely bring heavy rainfall and gusting winds.
Rainfall accumulations may average 1-2 inches, while some localized amounts could be up to 5 inches.
Drivers of vans, campers, trailers and other high-profile vehicles should be alert to the danger of high winds.

Showers and thunderstorms are predicted for our area until late afternoon, and some rainfall may be heavy.
Western portions of our area have already seen significant rainfall, and totals could be between 1 and 3 inches before the front moves through. This could lead to street flooding and rising water levels in area streams and bayous.
Remember, never drive through water and, if possible, remain indoors today! As the Weather Service reminds us, Turn Around – Don’t Drown.

Jan. 13, 2012 – Galveston County will conduct a Public Hearing on its “Fair Housing Activity Statement – Texas” (“FHAST Form”) on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, beginning at 5:30 PM. The hearing will be conducted in the Galveston County Commissioners Courtroom, first floor of the Galveston County Courthouse, 722 Moody (21st Street) in Galveston.

The purpose of the hearing is to obtain public comment on the FHAST Form, which describes Galveston County’s plans to affirmatively further fair housing in the county. Copies of the form will be available for discussion and review, and the public is invited and encouraged to attend. Advance copies can be downloaded from the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management website, www.gcoem.org, or obtained by calling 281-309-5002 or 1-888-384-2000.

Persons with functional needs who would like to attend the public hearing and require auxiliary aids or services should call 281-309-5002 for assistance by Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. January 9, 2012 @12:00 pm - The National Weather Service in League City has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Galveston County until 2:00 pm CST.  At 11:05 AM, the National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated that slow moving thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall were approaching the warned area.  Rainfall amounts of two to five inches have been reported upstream with these storms.  Runoff from this excessive rainfall may cause flash flooding to occur on land adjacent to small creeks and bayous as well as frontage roads, highway underpasses, farm-to-market and other secondary roads may flood.  Avoid locations where water covers the ground.  Please report severe weather to the county sheriff's office, local police department or Department of Public Safety and ask them to relay your report to the National Weather Service.
