Galveston County officials have awarded $167,130 in grants to 90 individuals and families who suffered losses from Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita last year.
Grants ranged from a low of $100 to a maximum of $2,750 for a family of four, with most awards averaging $1,900.
More than 500 applications were received for the one-time grant provided by the Governor’s Office, through the Texas Division of Emergency Management. The so-called “unmet needs” grant is funded with private donations, not tax dollars.
“While our funds were limited, I am pleased that we were able to help these 90 individuals and their families recover from the devastating hurricanes of last season,” said County Judge Jim Yarbrough.
The majority of recipients were low-income, disabled residents over 55, as required under the state grant guidelines. In most cases the recipients had received only minimal assistance from FEMA, private insurance and/or various relief agencies.
Grant applications were reviewed and approved by a committee of public and private individuals, including county employees and representatives of the American Red Cross.
