SITUATION REPORT #1

SUBJECT: Tropical Storm Gustav

DATE AND TIME COVERED: Thursday, 28 August 2008 07:00 AM through Friday, 29 August 2008 0700 AM

● CURRENT SITUATION:

The forecast track for Tropical Storm Gustav shows landfall in a wide area of uncertainty spanning most of the Texas Gulf Coast.  The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management is currently working extended daytime hours with activation of limited staff planned for Saturday morning at 0700 AM.  At 7:00 am CDT on Friday, August 29, 2008, the center of Tropical Storm Gustav was located near Latitude 10.30 North; Longitude 78.30 West.  Tropical Storm Gustav is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph.  Because of current weather conditions, the exact track of Gustav remains very uncertain.  The Galveston County Emergency Operations Center is activated and operating at a Readiness Condition 3. 

 All Galveston County Departments and Employees are advised to monitor this situation closely.

● AREAS AFFECTED BY THIS EVENT:  Galveston County and surrounding counties

● RESPONDING OFFICES/DEPARTMENTS, RESOURCES COMMITTED: GCOEM 

● CASUALTIES:  None.

● DAMAGES:   None reported at this time.

● EVACUATION:  Galveston County will not be requesting evacuation at this time. 

● SHELTER:   None at this time.

● ROADS CURRENTLY CLOSED/IMPACTED:  None at this time.

● CURRENT UTILITY OUTAGES:  None at this time.

● COMMENTS:
 
The Governor has issued a proclamation of threat of imminent disaster for 61 counties in Texas.  The Governor’s Division of Emergency Management has begun to pre-stage resources including buses in various locations along the Texas Gulf Coast. 

The Emergency Management Division is closely monitoring this situation.  Conference calls are being conducted with the Local Jurisdictions, National Weather Service, State of Texas Operations Center and our regional partners.  This Office and the Emergency Operations Center are on Level 3 with Core Staff working extended daytime hours in order to prepare.

  The four (4) levels of EOC activation are:

   Level 1 (Emergency Conditions)
   Level 2 (Escalated Response Conditions)
   Level 3 (Increased Readiness Conditions)
   Level 4 (Normal Conditions)
