DISASTER LOANS
The U.S. Small Business Administration has opened business assistance centers across the region. The office serving Mainland Galveston County is located at 8419 E.F. Lowry Expressway (the former Texas City-La Marque Chamber office near College of the Mainland). The office is open to provide low-interest disaster loans from 8 AM to 5 PM. For assistance or information on other locations, call toll-free 1-800-659-2955.
FEMA ASSISTANCE
FEMA assistance is being provided at a number of locations across the county. Mobile units are in place in High Island and at the Texas City County Building. A fixed office is operating at the Bayou Vista MUD Building, 2929 Hwy. 6, 2nd Floor. Efforts are under way to establish several other offices as well.
DEBRIS CLEANUP
Cleanup of debris resulting from Hurricane Ike is continuing. Residents are urged to place their debris at the curb, not in the street, and separate into woody debris, construction materials, and white goods. Citizens should call their local city hall for information about rules within your respective city limits.
BOLIVAR PENINSULA
The “look and leave” program remains in place for all of Bolivar Peninsula west of Rollover Pass. Citizens, insurance adjusters and recovery workers are allowed entry each day until 4 PM, when they are required to leave. Water and electricity have not been restored and will not be for some time.
Citizens are asked to move as much debris as possible to the curb or right of way. Damage assessment teams under contract with the County will be visiting every neighborhood in several weeks to begin damage surveys that must occur before permits can be issued to rebuild.
