Galveston County is seeking to assist homeowners interested in potential buyouts or elevations. In order to have sufficient time to complete the grant application to the federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, the County needs to know which citizens of unincorporated Galveston County are interested in the program no later than Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009.
Citizens of incorporated cities should contact their city officials for questions about buyouts and elevations. Galveston County’s program is restricted to residents of the flood-prone unincorporated areas (San Leon, Bacliff, Bayview, Lazy Bend, Freddiesville, and Bolivar Peninsula).
Citizens interested in being considered for this program need to download the Property Owner’s Handbook, complete pages 8-10, and return them to the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management, 1353 FM 646 West, Suite 302, Dickinson, TX 77539, by Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009. The three pages also may be faxed to 888-534-5607, or delivered to the Emergency Management office on FM 646.

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program is highly competitive. There is no guarantee Galveston County will receive a grant, and it is possible many properties will be deemed ineligible. If you are selected for inclusion in the program and Galveston County receives a grant award, you will be responsible for a 25% cost share.
Citizens who express an interest in the program and submit the required Handbook pages will be contacted by the County’s consultant, Beck Disaster Recovery. The Beck representative will help determine if your property is eligible under the guidelines set by the grant program and the County.
