When Hurricane Ike slammed into the Texas coast on September 12, 2008, it devastated many parts of rural Southeast Texas, inflicting terrible loss on all citizens in the region, including famers and ranchers. Over the past six months, the agriculture community has again demonstrated its resiliency as producers determined to focus on recovery rather than loss. To assist the agriculture community, the Texas Department of Agriculture is partnering with several other organizations to conduct "Operation New Fences."
Producers in the surge zone who need assistance with rebuilding fences are encouraged to sign up on the "Operation New Fences" web page at www.texasagriculture.gov. For more information, please contact Lance William, the Texas Department of Agriculture's Producer Relations Specialist, at (512) 463-3258 or by email at

Ike destroyed the land, homes and livelihoods of Southeast Texans, but it did not destroy our Texas spirit.
