Boy Scouts Earn Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge |

 Galveston County Office of Emergency Management knows the importance of a community that is prepared for emergencies. Recently, GCOEM teamed up with the Boy Scouts from Troop 609 for an evening of emergency management fun and learning. The Boy Scouts motto is “Be Prepared” and that’s a large part of emergency management. These Scouts are working on their Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge and asked to visit with emergency management staff to learn about emergency management and how they can help their families become better prepared.
Michael Lockwood and Tracy Hughes from GCOEM led the group in a
discussion about what it means to prepare for, respond to, recover from
and mitigate emergency events in our area. The group also talked about
all the agencies involved in emergency management. After the overview,
the scouts visited the National Weather Service where Lance Wood and
Chuck Roeseler talked about forecasting and weather safety. Then the
group had a chance to show what they learned with a hands-on disaster
drill in the Emergency Operations Center. The Scouts of Troop 609 are
well on their way to completing the requirements to earn the Emergency
Preparedness Merit Badge and GCOEM was happy to assist
