County to Host Recovery Meetings in San Leon and Bacliff PDF Print E-mail

Galveston  county will host two public meetings next week -- one in San Leon, and the other in Bacliff -- to provide the latest Hurricane Ike recovery information to residents of the hard-hit communities.

The first will be held from 6-8 PM Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at the San Leon Community Church, 805 10th St. in San Leon.  The second will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at the Bayshore VFW Post 8566, 1401 Grand Ave. in Bacliff.

Much like a recent public meeting on Bolivar Peninsula, county officials will provide infromation on the CDBG housing repair program as well as other social service programs to help citizens continue to recover from the devastating hurricane of Sept. 13, 2008.

The housing program provides $99 million in funding to eligible residents seeking repairs, rehabilitation, reconstruction, replacement, and/or elevation of an existing property.

Galveston County is partnering with a private company to assist with the details of the housing program.  Representatives of the company -- ACS State and Local Solutions - will attend the meetings to discuss eligibility criteria and the application process, which is set to begin later this month.

Local social service agencies already assisting residents of San Leon and Bacliff, including Lutheran Social Services, Catholic Charities, Boat People SOS and others, will be on hand to provide the latest information about their services as well.

"It is important that we identify individuals who can take advantage of these housing repair and replacement opportunities and other social service programs," said County Commissioner Patrick F. Doyle, who represents the San Leon-Bacliff and Bolivar Peninsula areas.

"The funds are now in place," Doyle said.  "Now we need our residents to apply, and we will help them through the process every step of the way."
