Highway 6 reopened to traffic PDF Print E-mail

Law enforcement officials opened Highway 6 in both directions Thursday just before 7 PM while the day-long response to a train derailment in Santa Fe continued.
All of the derailed Burlington Northern Santa Fe train cars were moved away from the tracks throughout the afternoon, and most of the approximately 20 cars were uprighted before darkness set in.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Highway 6 and FM 646 (Main Street) early Thursday morning. The derailment, in which one car spilled a non-hazardous liquid used in making asphalt, prompted the evacuation of a neighborhood along 18th Street. The evacuation order was lifted by mid-morning.
Response activities will likely continue throughout the day Friday.
