Workers for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad have nearly completed the cleanup of last week’s 22-car derailment in Santa Fe.
Propane was off-loaded from 10 of the derailed cars over the weekend, and the empty tankers are scheduled to be removed from their temporary location along 18th Street later this week. Several railcars containing sulfur need to be off-loaded and removed as well.
Replacement of the crossing arms should be completed this week.
The Thursday morning derailment initially led to an evacuation of a one-mile radius from the derailment site near the intersection of Highway 6 and FM 646. The evacuation area was reduced by mid-morning to just the neighborhood surrounding the incident.
Santa Fe police and fire, Dickinson police, Hitchcock police, several state agencies, and the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management have assisted with the response.
