Galveston County hosted classes this week in coastal construction, designed to encourage the adoption of better building standards in communities frequently targeted by Mother Nature’s wrath.
Attended by home builders, remodeling contractors, insurance agents, floodplain managers and public officials, the classes focused on home construction practices
that result in more resilient housing.
The classes were held at the Chamber of Commerce building on Bolivar Peninsula and at the Galveston County Emergency Management Facility on FM 646 in League City. Instructors were provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“We believe it is important to encourage better construction to ensure that our housing stock can survive a major hurricane or other weather event,” said John Simsen, the county’s emergency management coordinator. “More than 3,600 homes were destroyed by Hurricane Ike on Bolivar Peninsula alone, and many would have survived had they been built to today’s coastal construction standards."
