State Highway 87 is finally open to traffic.
Citizens and tourists have been anxious to begin their Fourth of July weekend on the peninsula, but the high water and heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Alex have dampened those plans and caused a prolonged closing of the primary evacuation route.
The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management is in constant contact with state, county and local officials on the Peninsula and is using the “Blackboard Connect” emergency notification system to keep citizens informed.
“Unfortunately, many homeowners have not entered their cell phones and email addresses into the Blackboard Connect system,” said John Simsen, emergency management coordinator for the county.
Signing up for Blackboard Connect is simple. Merely click on the box to the right of this news article: “Click Here for One-Step Notification.” When the map of Galveston County appears, click on Bolivar Peninsula, and follow the prompts. The more information you enter, the more ways Galveston County can reach you. The data remains confidential and you can opt out of the system at any time.
