State Highway 87 is now open to traffic between Rollover Pass and High Island on Bolivar Peninsula.
The highway was closed by the Texas Department of Transportation, with the assistance of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety, because of high tides related to the tropical weather.
The weather system made landfall Thursday afternoon near the Texas-Mexico border, and the tide level subsequently dropped, allowing the agencies to re-open the submerged highway.
Bear in mind, however, that the highway may be closed again early Thursday morning when the next high tide occurs. Tide levels may take several days to return to normal.
Galveston County unincorporated residents who have signed up for “Blackboard Connect” emergency notification messages are receiving regular updates directly to their telephones or email addresses.
