Celebrate the New Year With Safety in Mind PDF Print E-mail

Safety belts and sober driving can prevent holiday traffic deaths.  More than 600 people will die in motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. this holiday season, according to the National Safety Council. Take precautions during the New Year’s holiday, which is among the busiest travel periods of the year.
New Year’s parties are a time to eat, drink and be merry, but drunk driving can devastate the celebration. Last December, 753 people were killed in crashes that involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Do not drink and drive. Arrange for a sober driver or a cab if you plan to drink.
In addition to traveling, many like to bring in the New Year by using fireworks.  Fireworks are response for more than 11,000 injuries in the U.S. each year, and contribute to wildfires during times of drought.  The best way to enjoy fireworks is to visit public displays put on by professionals.
The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management wishes you a safe New Year’s holiday.
