County Seeks Additional Ike Recovery Funds PDF Print E-mail

Dec. 13, 2011 – Galveston County has submitted applications for funding to continue the county’s ongoing recovery from Hurricane Ike.
Though the hurricane struck more than three years ago, many public and individual recovery projects remain to be completed due to the great extent of the devastation and slow pace of government funding.
Hundreds of homeowners still need repairs to their residences, for example. And public infrastructure that either was damaged by the storm or failed to function needs repair or replacement.
The Galveston County Commissioners Court authorized grant applications for $31,558,883 in infrastructure funds (road repairs, generators, water and sewer line repairs, drainage work, etc.) and $115,725,091 in housing funds. The housing dollars will go toward single- and multi-family housing repairs and new construction, as well as demolition of blighted structures. The applications were submitted Dec. 9 to meet a state-imposed deadline.
The Commissioners Court also authorized a $2 million loan program for small businesses in the unincorporated areas that suffered damage or loss from Hurricane Ike.
All projects still must be approved by the Texas General Land Office, which administers the grant funds statewide.
