Southeast Texas Endured a Hot, Dry Year PDF Print E-mail

Jan. 2, 2012 -- Southeast Texas endured intense heat in 2011 to go along with record drought and dangerous wildfires.
The year 2011 was one of the warmest on record across Southeast Texas. Although data from the National Weather Service is preliminary, it appears the average temperature for the City of Houston will tie 1962 as the warmest year on record. It also will be recorded as the warmest year on record for Houston Hobby Airport and for the city of College Station.
The City of Galveston marked its second warmest year on record. The average temperature for Galveston for 2011 was 72.5 degrees, just shy of 2006’s record of 72.6.
According to the NWS, the six-month period from March 1 through Aug. 31 was the warmest period on record for Southeast Texas.
The year ended on a wet note, despite 2011 being one of the five driest years on record across Southeast Texas. A more detailed report providing additional climate data will be released by the NWS later this month.
