Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 – One of the most dangerous things you can do while operating a motor vehicle is attempt to drive through water on a flooded roadway.
Each year more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather-related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control report that more than half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is attributed to walking into or near flood waters.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s “Turn Around – Don’t Drown©” campaign is dedicated to educating the public about the dangers of driving or walking into flood waters. Did you know that a mere 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult? And just a few feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUV’s?
Play it smart, and play it safe: Anytime you encounter a flooded road, Turn Around – Don’t Drown!
