March 7, 2012 – Three coastal counties with a lot in common – getting out of the way of an approaching hurricane – got together in Galveston this week to better plan for the next major storm.
County Judges Mark Henry (Galveston), Joe King (Brazoria), Nate McDonald (Matagorda) and Mayor Joe Jaworski of Galveston Monday kicked off the two-day workshop and exercise designed to test plans for evacuation, sheltering, and re-entry of the three-county area.
More than 100 local emergency managers including representatives of the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Division of Emergency Management participated in the activities, culminating with an exercise involving pre-landfall activities surrounding a Category 3 hurricane.
The National Weather Service and local industry partners also participated in the workshop, held at the San Luis Hotel in Galveston. The workshop stressed the importance of strong relationships and communication between the partnering jurisdictions.
Hurricane season begins June 1.
