Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced a targeted raise in the threat level because of information uncovered in today's arrests in the United Kingdom.  "The United States Government has raised the nation's threat level to Severe, or Red for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom bound for the United States."

Secretary Chertoff went on to explain, "To defend further against any remaining threat from this plot, we will also raise the threat level to High, or Orange for all commercial aviation operating in or destined for the United States."  The general threat level for the nation will remain at Elevated, or Yellow.

The Transportation Security Administration announced that, as of this morning, no liquids, including beverages, hair gels or lotions will be allowed to be carried on the airplane.  Exceptions will be made for liquid prescription medication and baby formulas.

Some advice for easing your passage through the security checkpoints include:

  • Arrive for your flights early.  Check with the airport you will be departing from, but most are recommending two full hours.
  • Transfer all liquids, gels and lotions from your carry-on baggage to your checked baggage.
  • Consume all beverages you may purchased prior to the flight.
  • Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off as this will again be a requirement.
  • De-clutter your carry-on bag.  The easier it is to see the contents, the faster it can be screened.

Also in this morning's press conference, Secretary Chertoff urged travelers to go about their plans, while maintaining vigilance in their surroundings.  He also urged patience with screening and security officials as the new measures are implemented in airports.
