Galveston County - No Stranger to Disaster PDF Print E-mail

Since Galveston County was established in 1838, its citizens have been no stranger to disaster.  The hurricane of 1900 is still on record as the nation's worst natural disaster claiming over 6,000 lives.  Several years later in 1947, Texas City experienced what is still considered the worst industrial accident in history claiming over 570 lives.  Still the residents of Galveston County have persevered, recoving from these events and rebuilding the County and their lives.  Although not then recognized as a discipline, Emergency Management must indeed have some of its roots in Galveston County.
