The Santa Fe Police Department, with assistance from the Galveston County Sheriff's Office and other local law enforcement and fire departments, is responding to a train derailment in the vicinity of Avenue M and 18th Street in Santa Fe. A shelter has been established at Santa Fe Junior High School. School will remain in session today. Approximately 12-18 train cars derailed early this morning, prompting the evacuation of neighborhoods in the immediate vicinity. Traffic is moving on Highway 6, but is being diverted to side streets near the incident. Motorists are urged to avoid using Highway 6 for the next several hours.
