Cleanup of train derailment continuing

First responders and contractors for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad continue to work the scene of a train derailment in Santa Fe. The early morning derailment of approximately 20 cars in the vicinity of 18th Street and Avenue M forced the evacuation of nearby residents. Some went to a shelter at Santa Fe Junior High School but soon made other arrangements and the shelter was closed. The evacuation order was lifted mid-morning.

At least one car carrying asphalt ruptured and leaked into a nearby ditch. The chemical is not considered a hazard to the public. Heavy equipment was brought in from two Houston-based companies to help with the cleanup and railcar removal. It is not known how long the cleanup will take or how long traffic conditions may be impacted.

Many local and state agencies have assisted with the response effort, including Santa Fe police and fire, Hitchcock police, Alvin fire and rescue, Dickinson police, the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Public Safety, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The northbound train was headed from Galveston to Temple when the derailment occurred.
