Surviving the Sultry Gulf Coast Summers

No doubt about it, the dog days of summer are upon us.  From 1979-2002, excessive heat exposure caused more deaths in the United States than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined.  In Galveston County, there is little we can do to escape the heat, but we can take some simple steps to protect our health and well-being.

  • Be sure to drink plenty of liquids.  Fluids help you sweat, which is your body's way of cooling off.  Drink lots of water, juice or sports drinks.  Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks.
  • Set your air conditioner between 76 and 80 degrees.  If you don't have an air conditioner, take a cool bath or shower once or twice a day.  This is a good time to visit air conditioned public places like the mall or library.
  • Reserve vigorous exercise or activities for early morning or evening.
  • Your clothing matters on a hot day.  Wear a brimmed hat and light-colored, light-weight clothing that breathes.
  • If you must be out in the sun, don't forget to apply sunscreen and reapply as necessary.  A sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher is recommended.  The most effective products say "broad spectrum" or "UVA/UVB protection" on their labels.
  • Don't forget your pets.  Make sure your pets have shelter and plenty of fresh water and food.
  • At greater risk are the elderly, children and people with certain medical conditions such as heart disease.  If you have elderly neighbors or family, please check on them during very hot days.
  • Never, ever leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.  The same is true for pets.

In addition to heat related health matters, remember that the State's power grid may be under an extreme load.  Compensate for running your air conditioner more by using other appliances less or by using them during non-peak hours.

Have fun this summer, but stay safe.
