Preparing a comprehensive recovery kit can ease the transition back to normalcy and empower you to take charge of your surroundings. Recovery

Expecting the Unexpected: What to Anticipate Post-Hurricane

Returning home after a hurricane can be disorienting, with disruptions in utilities, limited resources, and damaged infrastructure:

Lack of Utilities: Be prepared for power, water, and gas outages that could last for days or even weeks.

Limited Supplies: Understand that local businesses may be closed or damaged, impacting access to essential goods and services. Bring resources back with you when you return from evacuation.

Medical Care and Public Safety: Medical care and public safety resources might be limited due to damage and high demand.

Building Your Hurricane Recovery Kit: What to Pack

When returning home after a hurricane, being well-prepared can make all the difference. Pack the following items in your recovery kit:

Extensive First Aid Kit: Include bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and medical supplies for minor injuries. Clinics may be closed and there are significant hazards in post hurricane debris.

Shelf-Stable Food and Water: Pack enough non-perishable food for your household, and at least one gallon of water per person per day. Don’t forget a manual can opener and paper goods.

Important Documents: Include insurance paperwork, contact information, personal identification, and property and vehicle records. Also keep either hard copies or a thumb drive with all pre-hurricane property photos and receipts.

Cleaning Supplies: Bring trash bags, bleach, all-purpose cleaners, mops, and brooms for cleaning up your property. Rubber gloves and boots are helpful during clean-up operations.

Mucking and Gutting Supplies: Include pry bars, work gloves, hammers, and tools for removing debris and damaged structures.

Tree Removal Equipment: Pack hand saws, chain saws, and protective eyewear for clearing downed trees.

Generators and Fuel: Bring a generator, extra fuel and extension cords for use while the power is out.

Creating a hurricane recovery kit is a powerful way to take control of your situation after the storm. By including first aid supplies, food, water, important documents, cleaning materials, and essential tools, you're ensuring your family's safety and well-being in the challenging aftermath. Remember, resilience begins with preparation, and your preparedness efforts will help you rebuild your life with strength and determination. Stay resourceful, stay cautious, and stay strong. Preparedness saves lives.
