On September 8, 1900, Galveston, Texas was devastated by a hurricane that killed an estimated 12,000 people. The storm was the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history and caused extensive damage to the island city.
The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) remembers the victims of the 1900 storm and pays tribute to the resilience of the Galveston community. OEM is committed to working with local, state, and federal partners to prepare for and respond to natural disasters.
