The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management is committed to promoting safe hunting practices throughout the county. With hunting season fast approaching, we would like to share some important tips and guidelines to help ensure that your hunting experience is both enjoyable and accident-free.

1. Firearms Safety: Always treat every firearm as if it's loaded. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. Know your target and what lies beyond it to prevent accidental shootings.

2. Wear Hunter Orange: Hunter orange is highly visible and helps to distinguish you from wildlife. Wear it prominently to ensure other hunters can see you and avoid potential accidents.

3. Use Safety Equipment: Don't forget to wear safety equipment, including blaze orange or bright colors. Use hearing protection, especially when using firearms. Make sure to check your equipment, such as tree stands, before heading into the woods.

4. Know Your Hunting Area: Familiarize yourself with the hunting area and create a plan. Make sure someone knows your whereabouts and expected return time. Carry a map, GPS device, or compass to prevent getting lost.

5. Stay Sober: Alcohol and drugs should never be combined with hunting. Impaired judgment can lead to accidents, so always stay sober while in the field.

6. Respect Property Rights: Always obtain proper permission to hunt on private lands. Know the boundaries and respect the rights of landowners.
