Heat Illness

As temperatures soar in Galveston County this week, it’s crucial to stay informed and take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of extreme heat. Here are some essential safety tips to help you beat the heat and stay safe:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic beverages as they can dehydrate you.
  2. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses!
  3. Stay Indoors During Peak Heat: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or a cool place.
  4. Use Fans and Air Conditioning: Make sure your home is properly ventilated. Use fans or air conditioning to keep cool. If you don’t have air conditioning, visit a cooling center or public place like a library or shopping mall.
  5. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on children, the elderly, and pets. Make sure they are also staying cool and hydrated.
  6. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness: Be aware of symptoms such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. If you or someone else shows these symptoms, move to a cooler place, drink water, and seek medical help if necessary.

Stay safe and cool, Galveston County!
