Stay Ready: Galveston County's Emergency Preparedness Guide

Preparedness is a year-round responsibility for all Galveston County residents. Natural disasters like tropical storms, flash floods, and severe thunderstorms can strike at any time. GCOEM encourages every resident to take the following steps to ensure their families and homes are safe.

1. Make a Plan

  • Identify Evacuation Routes: Know multiple routes in case of road closures.
  • Create a Communication Plan: Decide how to reconnect if separated.
  • Plan for Pets: Ensure pets are included in evacuation plans.

2. Build an Emergency Kit

  • Supplies for 72 Hours: Water, food, medications, and hygiene items.
  • Important Documents: Store passports, insurance policies, and ID cards in a waterproof container.
  • Tools and Safety Equipment: Include flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit.

3. Stay Informed

GCOEM provides real-time alerts through the Everbridge notification system. Monitor GCOEM.org for updates, and follow local weather forecasts from trusted sources such as the National Weather Service.

4. Protect Your Property

  • Clear Gutters: Ensure water can flow away from your home to prevent flooding.
  • Secure Loose Items: Prevent items from becoming hazards in high winds.
  • Consider Flood Insurance: Most policies take 30 days to go into effect.
