Know the Signs, Save a Life — Heat-Related Illnesses in Galveston County

Summers in Galveston County bring beautiful beaches, outdoor fun, and dangerous heat! Extreme heat can cause a range of serious health problems, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Common Symptoms of Heat-Related Illness:

  • Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache

  • Heat Stroke (a medical emergency): Confusion, loss of consciousness, hot/dry skin, high body temperature

Who’s Most at Risk?

  • Older adults

  • Young children

  • Outdoor workers

  • Individuals without air conditioning

  • People with chronic illnesses

Stay Safe:

  • Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty.

  • Take breaks in the shade or A/C.

  • Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours (10 AM – 4 PM).

If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move them to a cooler location.
