Heatstroke Prevention Tips

Heatstroke is Fast—and Fatal. Prevention is Power

Post Date:05/21/2025

Galveston County’s Gulf Coast sun is beautiful and provides some health benefits, but it can also be a serious matter to consider. A parked car can hit 130°F+ in minutes, and prolonged outdoor exposure can overwhelm the body quickly.

Prevent Heatstroke With These Tips:

  • Never leave people or pets in a vehicle - not even for a minute.

  • Schedule outdoor work and play early or late in the day.

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

  • Use sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats to reduce heat stress.

  • Stay hydrated particularly during the hotter periods of the day.

Local Insight: Coastal humidity makes it feel hotter. Check the heat index, not just the temperature, on the National Weather Service – Houston/Galveston forecast page here.
