Galveston County is monitoring a cold weather system expected to impact the region this weekend. The Office of Emergency Management is working closely with the National Weather Service Houston and coordinating with local and state partners.

Freezing temperatures are expected to begin Saturday night and possibly last through Monday morning. Monday night into Tuesday morning, temperatures will likely drop back below freezing. There is a chance of precipitation Sunday morning. Keep an eye on road conditions if you plan to travel Sunday evening or Monday morning.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for dropping temperatures by focusing on the 4 P’s:

  • Pipes: Wrap and insulate pipes, especially exterior pipes and those on elevated structures.
  • People: Dress in warm layers when outdoors and check on elderly or vulnerable family members and neighbors.
  • Pets: If it’s too cold for people, it’s too cold for pets. Bring them indoors or ensure they have adequate warmth.
  • Plants: Bring plants indoors or cover them to protect from freezing temperatures.

If using space heaters, use extra caution:

  • Never leave space heaters unattended.
  • Keep heaters away from flammable items such as blankets and furniture.

Never use outdoor grills or heaters indoors, as this creates a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
