Galveston County is expecting to have scattered thunderstorm over the next week. These storms can produce some pretty spectacular lightning shows. If you are outdoors when you hear thunder or see lightning, go indoors. Stay away from open areas, trees, and utility poles.

When the thunder roars, go indoors!

Know the 30/30 Rule - When lightning strikes, count until you hear thunder. If it is less than 30 seconds, go inside! Wait inside until 30 minutes after the last thunder.

Remember to avoid corded electrical items like phones and computers as well as plumbing. Anything that can be used to conduct electricity can make a path to you. This also means avoiding isolated high spots.

Know the difference between a thunderstorm watch and a warning.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means to be prepared, there is a possibility of severe thunderstorms. These watches can typically last from 4 to 8 hours.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means take action. It is happening! These warnings typically last 1 hour.

Be prepared for power outages. Many things in a disaster kit can be used for many different types of incidents so build a kit.
