Tis the season in Texas for fog. Drive safe on those foggy mornings by following these safety tips.
- Use low beams - This will increase your visibility and help other drivers see you. Turning on your high beams will make the fog reflect more light at a higher angle creating a white out effect.
- Minimize distractions - While always important, minimizing distractions is more critical in foggy weather.
- Navigate with reflectors - use reflectors on the road or the right edge to ensure you are staying in your lane. This works also with sun glare.
- Increase following distance - Use the 3 second rule all the time, and increase that to five during inclement weather like fog.
- Reduce speed - reducing your speed will give you more time to react.
Did you know?
The average reaction time is about 3/4 of a second. This means that at 55 miles per hour, you would travel 60 feet before reacting. Slamming on the breaks at 55 miles per hour in ideal conditions will take the average car 170 feet to stop. This is why it is recommended to give 300-400 feet of stopping distance. This means you will come to a stop about a football field away from where you started.
